Central Passage
Romans 13:1
Description
  1. Rom. 13:1 Paul urged Christians to be in subjection to and model citizens of the governing authorities because God has installed the civil order to punish wrongdoers.
  2. Peter gave similar instructions about submission (1 Pt 2:13, 14, 17).
    1. However, submission to civil authorities is not absolute.
    2. Jesus established a central Christian principle.
      1. Matt. 22:21
    3. Luke in Acts has a limitation to civil authority.
      1. Acts 5:29
  3. ALL submission to the civil authorities must pass through the filter of God’s long-term plan of salvation and call upon a believer’s life.
    1. The difficulty is discerning God’s plan in the short term and calling in those areas to which Scripture does not speak explicitly
      1. Therefore, we must apply biblical principles.
      2. The Christian’s crucial duty is to discern/obey God’s principles carefully.
        1. We are not to be surprised that obeying God against the civil authority may result in anger/retaliation God is Sovereign
        2. Church history well attests
          1. This will put a Christian in good company (Mt 5:10-12).
